I’m putting Philly in quotes because this isn’t technically like a Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich but it’s still a cheesy steak sandwich. I made these ironically though on the day that “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”, one of our favorite shows, came back with it’s season premiere.
Our local grocery store had a huge sale on meat and when I went shopping I had only a few things on my list, none of which would help me with dinner really, other than “meat”. Well, they had this sirloin steak on sale and it looked good but not as a slab of beef so the only thing I could think to do with it is maybe a steak salad or something with thin strips of steak. While walking past the bakery I saw hoagie buns – Mmm… bread! Then it hit me – STEAK SANDWICHES!!!
For us to make they were super simple and delicious but if anyone else wants to make them I’m sure you’d want to tweak as ours were literally just the meat, some seasoning, cheese and bread. But, that’s what we like.
“Philly” Cheesesteak Sandwiches
~1lb. thin sirloin tip steak, thinly sliced
~ 1/2 tablespoon Lawry’s Season Salt
1 teaspoon minced onion
1 teaspoon garlic, finely chopped
2 slices Provelone Cheese
2 Hoagie Rolls
Olive Oil to coat skillet
– Preheat broiler or Preheat oven to about 375
– after slicing steak, toss in a bowl with Season Salt, Minced Onion and Garlic to coat steak with seasonings
– heat oil in skillet over medium heat
– add steak to skillet and stir occasionally to flip, cook until steak reaches desired temperature (I over cooked a little)
– Split rolls in half, long-ways, but not all the way through
– top each roll with meat mixture – about 1/3 a pound of meat (keep some meat for a nice salad for lunch, side salad the next day, etc.!)
– Split each slice of provelone in half and place 2 halves on each sandwich
– Place sandwiches on a broiler safe/oven-safe baking sheet and place in broiler for a few minutes until cheese is melted, or in oven for about 5-8 minutes until cheese is melted.
* Most people will probably want to add a step – sauteeing up lots of onion to place the steak on. Also, to make it a little more authentic to Philly I could have used Cheese-Wiz but I didn’t want to do that.
